According to Cultureamp.com, “Diversity in the workplace refers to an organization that intentionally employs a workforce comprised of individuals with a range of characteristics, such as gender, religion, race, age, ethnicity, sexual orientation, education, and other attributes.”

Today’s workplace is more diverse than it has ever been and it is increasing every day. And as we grow as a society, we are starting to see the importance and benefits of bringing difference races, nationalities, religions, and sexes together as one team and community. Organizations are getting more concerned of developing the diverse workforce over the years to achieve better outcome and competitiveness because a more diverse workforce will increase organizational effectiveness, it will also lift employee morale, bring greater access to new segments of the marketplace, enhance productivity and performances and it drives creativity and innovation. Therefore, diversity is better for businesses and its employees.

Base on my experience, being in a diverse workplace gave me an amazing way to explore my inner curiosities. I gained a lot of learnings; it gave me the opportunity to live outside my comfort zone and it developed my overall sense of personal growth. I believe that the more diverse our group is, the more we have to learn. Back in the US, I worked with different nationalities and as a chef I learned a lot of cuisines and techniques from them and also, I learned new languages, I was exposed to new cultures and traditions, and most importantly I gain new friends. I believe that embracing different cultures can help us to learn new things and gain valuable insights that we can use in the future.

To conclude, placing a high importance on having a diverse workplace mean that a business is expressing fairness by giving an equal opportunity to people from different ethnic, gender and social groups. It also demonstrates that the company is serious about equality and treating all people with respect. Having a diverse workplace is not only beneficial to the company, to the employees but most especially to the society as a whole.

We are all different, and we can all learn from one another – let us open our heart to diversity and we may just find personal enlightenment at the end.
