Honesty is just a simple word but has a huge impact when it comes to academic and work ethics. It is the foundation of trust and good relationship. The question is, what is the real definition of honesty? How can we apply honesty that we learn from academic ethics to workplace?
During the first week of class, teacher usually introduce the rules of the school. And one of the common norms is honesty. Institutions typically deal with honesty dilemma such as plagiarism, fabrication, cheating and deception. At school, they say to avoid plagiarism we need to give proper citation, every time we have to source out information. That is how we value other people’s work and ideas.
There is common denominator between the academic and work when it comes to honesty. And that is to give credit to the owner. Honesty creates healthy workplace, which results to high productivity. By being honest at work, you will gain your credibility.
I’ll give you some examples, and this is when I was working at a private company. I suffer backstabbing from my co employee, and she also took credit of my work. Little did she know I’ve been transparent with my work, regardless of the outcome, and that’s how I built my credibility to my boss. This incident doesn’t bother me at all, instead it motivates me more to become a model of honesty in my workplace.
Lastly the definition of Honesty for me, is doing what is right especially when no one is around.
